Author Guidelines

J S&E publishes high quality, peer-reviewed, original research by promising students of science and engineering. Our primary aim is to highlight science and engineering original reseach done by secondary students. An ancillary goal is to teach science/engineering communication, technical writing, and the peer review process to secondary students.

We invite original submissions in the general areas of science and engineering in the form of research articles and short communications/letters/extended abstracts. For other formats please inquire with the editor.

Research articles

Formatting: Submissions should have format/style appropriate for their subject matter. For example, submissions in physics/mechanics might be formatted as for an APS journal article; those in electrical engineering as for an IEEE Journal; IEEE or ACM for computer science; AMS for math; similarly for chemistry, biology, or other subjects.

Organization: For research articles, please include a title and an abstract of about one paragraph. The main body of the manuscript should be organized into sections (Introduction, Methods and Materials, Results, Discussion) with subsections as needed. Brief acknowledgements and appropriately formatted references should come at the end.  Figures and tables should be numbered and referred to in the text.  Citation format and bibliographic format should be appropriate for the subject matter.

Authors may choose to use LaTeX or a docx or similar template; LaTeX is encouraged if formatting for a field/journal that uses it and .tex files may be submitted in the revisions stage. As examples, students in physics use revtex4-2; those working on electrical engineering projects use ieeetrans; etc. LaTeX is not required and authors who are unable to use it may submit using some other appropriate format; the goal is for authors not to spend too much time formatting, but to provide manuscript text in a form that can be readily converted to final copy by journal staff.  The preferred form for initial submissions is PDF, solely for ease of distribution to reviewers.

Conference abstracts

For conference abstracts, please provide title, authors with affiliations and contact information, a one paragraph abstract and keywords.
